چکیده

The natural sources of 210Po and 210Pb in the terrestrial environment are from atmospheric deposition, soil and ground water. The uptake of radionuclides from soil to plant given as the soil transfer factor, varies widely between various types of crops with an average about 0.056±0.003. The atmospheric deposition of 210Pb and 210Po also affect the activity concentrations in leafy plants with a deposition transfer factor for 210Pb is in the order of 0.1-1 (m2.Bq-1) plants and for root fruits it is < 0.003, Corresponding values for 210Po are about a factor 3 higher. The activity concentration ratios between milk and various types of forage for 210Pb were estimated to 1.4±0.7 and for 210Po to 0.41±0.09. By a daily food intake of 16 kg dry matter per day the transfer coefficient Fm. for 210Pb was estimated to 0.01±0.008 d.l-1 and for 210Po 0.003 ± 0.0007 d.l-1. The high accumulation of 210Po in the food chain Lichens (Cladonia alpestris)-Reindeer was used as a model for quantifying it ́s transfer to man. Chapter POLONIUM - 210 IN THE BIO - SPHERE : BIO - KINETICS AND BIOLOGICAL EFFECTS

Polonium-210 is an alpha particle emitting radioactive element with a half-life of 138 days. It appears at the end of the decay-chain of Uranium-238 where the long lived Lead-210 (22.3 a) decays to Bismuth-210, and finally Polonium-210. Po is introduced into the biosphere through various routes of terrestrial and marine radioecological pathways. The level of Po activity in drinking water (5 Bq....

(210)Po and (210)Pb in the tissues of the deep-sea hydrothermal vent mussel Bathymodiolus azoricus from the Menez Gwen field (Mid-Atlantic Ridge).

The hydrothermal deep-sea vent fauna is naturally exposed to a highly specific environment enriched in potentially toxic species such as sulfides, metals and natural radionuclides due to the convective seawater circulation inside the oceanic crust and its interaction with basaltic or ultramafic host rocks. However, data on radionuclides in biota from such environment are very limited. An invest...

Polonium and Lung Cancer

The alpha-radioactive polonium 210 (Po-210) is one of the most powerful carcinogenic agents of tobacco smoke and is responsible for the histotype shift of lung cancer from squamous cell type to adenocarcinoma. According to several studies, the principal source of Po-210 is the fertilizers used in tobacco plants, which are rich in polyphosphates containing radio (Ra-226) and its decay products, ...

Bioaccumulation of 210 Po and 210 Pb in Arctic seabirds

INTRODUCTION When considering the potential radiological impacts of anthropogenic radionuclides in the environment, it is important to understand the doses incurred by biota by natural activity concentrations of naturally occurring radionuclides. Naturally occurring Po (half-life138 days) and Pb (half-life 22.3 years) are members of the U decay chain. In the marine environment, Po and Pb are pr...

A study on possible use of Urtica dioica (common nettle) plant as polonium 210Po and lead 210Pb contamination biomonitor in the area of phosphogypsum stockpile

The aim of this study was to test a possible use of Urtica dioica (common nettle) plant as a biomonitor of polonium (210)Po and lead (210)Pb contamination near phosphogypsum stacks by determining concentrations of these radionuclides in samples collected from the area of phosphogypsum stockpile in Wiślinka (northern Poland). The (210)Po and (210)Pb contents in roots depended on their concentrat...
